Assignment 2
(All students: Required.)
Choose one of the following assignments 2a or 2b, or combine them into a single project (for example, a page that displays Google search results in a way that is influenced by the current weather).

Assignment 2a. Google.

Lab students: Create a web search engine, designing and implementing the query page and the results pages. Google provides a web service which will provide search result data to your program; I will show you how to use it (see also Lab 4). You can use all or some the data Google provides. Develop a specific attitude about the relationship you want to create between users and the web that they’re entering. To what extent can you express such a relationship through typography? How will your hierarchy and typography deviate from that used by Google and how can you justify this?

Non-lab students: See http://grrrlist.net, a live newsgroup comprised of all the internet’s newsgroup posts that contain the word “grrr.” Consider how a search term allows us a new entrance into an environment, or entrance to an environment that is otherwise inaccessible. Create anything that could allow users a new method for entering into a particular book, the city of New Haven, Yale’s campus, the stacks of Sterling Library, or the Wallingford Wal-Mart Supercenter. As a designer, what choices could allow you to incorporate your own agency into a search system that is still open to multiple uses?

Assignment 2b. Weather.

All students: Design a display of current weather conditions and/or the weather forecast-- either for a single city (such as New Haven) or for multiple cities (which, if you wish, could be selected by the user). What kind of design system will you create to accommodate all possible weather conditions? Consider how your own agency as a designer can enter into such a project. Lab students: Yahoo provides a web service which will provide weather data to your program; I will show you how to use it (see also Lab 4).
